I had this weird nervousness today about putting in the DVD. I haven’t worked out in 10 days and I had these thoughts running through my head like:
> Will I be able to do this?
> What if I can’t get back into my groove with exercise?
> Is this going to be too hard for me?
> What if I workout today but don’t feel like it tomorrow?
> Will I never be able to workout again?
It reminded me how we ALL have these feelings when starting something new. We have insecurities, fears, and questions that we ask ourselves in our own heads. [And some of them don’t even make sense.] But we have them right?
I have the privilege of being able to support a lot of women who are just starting a new workout program so this was a good reminder to me about the MENTAL BLOCKS that so many of us have when starting something new.
It CAN be scary. Straight up. Even for someone like me who has been working out consistently for years.
So, I thought about what ADVICE I would give to people who feel this. If you feel nervous about starting a workout program or just getting your body moving, here are some thoughts:
1. We all have things going on in our heads that may not seem logical but which holds us back. Why would I ask myself if I could ever workout again? Like that’s a weird thing to think. But I thought it. So, if weird fears pop up in your head, you are not alone.
2. As “recovering perfectionists”, so many of us have “all or nothing thinking”. Either we want to do it perfectly. Or, not at all. We have to let go of that and say, “Girl, just do what you can. You are in your basement and no one is watching.” [P.S. Can I mention that there were times that I was supposed to do 15 reps and I only did 5? Yep, didn’t feel like I could do much more. But that’s okay.]
3. Get some SUPPORT! Call up a friend, your mom, your sister, someone and say, “You know what, I WANT to do XYZ in my life but something is holding me back. Can you help me figure this out?” Then just talk about it. We are women and sometimes we need to VERBALIZE things just to understand what we are thinking and why we are thinking it. And a friend can help us get out of our own way.
So, those are my thoughts. What helps YOU when you have these thoughts going on that hold you back? How do you snap out of it and get moving?
