I want to talk about something new that I learned. It’s about RESISTANCE. I used to think that the thing that held me back from doing what I wanted was fear. But in most cases, I believe it’s actually resistance.
Resistance comes anytime you want to do something new and out of your comfort zone. It’s insidious. It can trick you.
I’ll give you an example. My coach challenged me to do some cold calls to people who filled out a survey about their health and fitness goals. When she first mentioned this, my stomach dropped. My first thought was, “I cannot do that.”
Even though I eventually agreed to do them…resistance was pushing hard on me. I could think of 100 OTHER things to do before I made those calls. I procrastinated. I reasoned with myself. I busied myself with other activities that I told myself were more important (which wasn’t true).
Today I had a goal to cold call 7 people. I could FEEL the resistance rising up in me. I could feel the excuses, the other things I’d rather do, etc. BUT, since I now know what it is, I can beat it. I decided to drop everything and push through it.
Part of our journey here is to become who we are meant to be. And to do that, we have to figure out how to move through the resistance that we all naturally have. We all have it. And it’s very powerful. But you are more powerful if you choose to confront it.
I recently read a whole book about resistance which I found FASCINATING. You can download the entire book for free at the link below.
I’d encourage you to ask yourself WHERE are you facing resistance in your life? What do you need to push through it?
Here are some of the quotes from the book the The War of Art:
We’re wrong if we think we’re the only ones struggling with Resistance. Everyone who has a body experiences Resistance.
Resistance cannot be seen, touched, heard, or smelled. But it can be felt. We experience it as an energy field radiating from a work-in-potential. It’s a repelling force. It’s negative. Its aim is to shove us away, distract us, prevent us from doing our work.
Resistance will tell you anything to keep you from doing your work. It will perjure, fabricate, falsify; seduce, bully, cajole. Resistance is protean. It will assume any form, if that’s what it takes to deceive you. It will reason with you like a lawyer or jam a nine-millimeter in your face like a stickup man. Resistance has no conscience. It will pledge anything to get a deal, then double-cross you as soon as your back is turned. If you take Resistance at its word, you deserve everything you get. Resistance is always lying.
